Pack an Emergency Kit
Packing an emergency kit in your car can help you get back on the road and keep you protected from the elements until help arrives. Add these items to your kit (and store it in the car in case your trunk freezes shut): jumper cables, flares/reflectors, windshield washer fluid, an ice scraper, blankets, a first aid kit, non-perishable food, traction material like sand, and a phone charger.
Wipers On = Headlights On
Illinois statute requires drivers to turn on their headlights any time that insufficient light or weather conditions impact your ability to clearly see other vehicles and pedestrians. When you turn on your wipers during rain, fog, or snow, turn on your headlights, too!
Slow Down and Use Caution
Give yourself extra time on each journey and leave plenty of space between you and other vehicles. Black ice can be difficult to spot until it's too late. If you drive on ice, do not hit the brakes! Instead, try to keep your steering wheel straight, or if the back of your car slides to the left or right, gently turn your steering wheel in the same direction to avoid skidding or spinning out.
