SRVC Reminders of Support Services

Although risk reduction and education outreach are a priority of the Sexual & Relationship Violence Center, as the new year begins, the SRVC reminds students of available services. Another SRVC priority is providing help through a support group, counseling and individualized victim advocacy when sexual and relationship violence happens.

The fall 2024 SRVC support group is about to begin. The group functions as a peer-based group facilitated by an SRVC staff member. Meeting weekly and conveniently on campus, the group is a safe and confidential space for peers to help each other heal from sexual and relationship violence.

Within the group, members give and receive perspective and insight on matters of shared experiences. Reassurance from peers on matters one is struggling with can be helpful with finding resolution. The support group is also a safe space to just vent. Overall, through interactions and activities, the group provides support and understanding.

In addition, the SRVC provides short-term counseling services with a licensed, trauma-trained counselor for U of A students who are victims/survivors of sexual or relationship violence. Students struggling from the trauma of sexual or relationship violence may meet with the counselor at the SRVC. The individual counseling sessions are free and confidential.

Individualized victim advocacy with a trained victim advocate serves to assist students with support along their healing journey and to provide understanding of options and resources. A victim advocate can help identify the options and resources based on students' unique needs. A victim advocate can help explain processes and assist the student as appropriate with intervention.

All SRVC advocacy and support services are confidential and at no cost. Individualized advocacy is available to students in immediate need by walk-in during office hours or by phone. Support group and counseling services require the scheduling of an intake session. During an intake session, appropriateness of service needs is assessed prior to any scheduling of additional services.

The SRVC is located at the Garland Garage Office and Retail space, 640 Garland Ave., Suite 113. The campus address is GACS 113. SRVC hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. for lunch. After hours, volunteer victim advocates are available for acute situations by calling the SRVC.
