WASHINGTON, D.C. -Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09) and the Florida Democratic Delegation released the following statement in response to Florida's six-week abortion ban, effective today, May 1, 2024:

"Today and every day, the truth remains clear: People, not politicians, should be in control of their own reproductive health decisions.

"Florida's draconian six-week abortion ban is outrageous-a blow to Floridians' reproductive freedom. Rather than progressing as a society, Florida's suffocating law sets us back as a state.

"The decision to seek an abortion is a personal decision that should remain private, not be put in the hands of politicians.

"This extreme ban not only hurts vulnerable Floridians, it threatens doctors and nurses, and drives away residents from our great state. Floridians face a crisis under this tyranny, but they have an opportunity to make their voices heard come November.

"Our state must choose: Stand for the freedom of individuals to control their own bodies, or shamelessly trample on people's most personal medical decisions.

"Our fight for reproductive justice is unwavering. Until abortion access is guaranteed nationwide, our battle persists, not just in Florida, but across the nation."

In addition to Congressman Soto, the letter was signed by all members of the Florida Democratic Delegation: Reps. Kathy Castor (FL-14), Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20), Lois Frankel (FL-22), Maxwell Alejandro Frost (FL-10), Jared Moskowitz (FL-23), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-25), and Frederica Wilson (FL-24).
