CANYON, Texas - West Texas A&M University's jazz bands will offer a fall concert packed with tunes from beloved composers.
Jazz Band I and II will perform at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 in Mary Moody Northen Recital Hall on WT's Canyon campus. Admission is free. For information, call 806-651-2840.
"This concert offers a deep dive into the rich history of jazz repertoire, featuring pieces that span decades and styles," said Dr. James Barger, associate professor of saxophone. "Both bands perform with an energy and nuance that bring out the unique character in each piece, making this the perfect evening for seasoned jazz lovers and anyone looking to experience the full spectrum of this art form live."
Jazz Band I-under the direction of Doug Storey, associate professor of clarinet-will perform "Cut 'n Run" by Gordon Goodwin, "Nice 'n Juicy" by Jeff Steinberg, "Crystal Silence" by Chick Corea and arranged by Mike Tomaro, "Cherokee" by Bill Noble and arranged by Frank Mantooth, and "Mueva Los Huesos (Shake Your Bones)" by Goodwin.
Members are Dillon Martin, a senior music education major from Odessa; Michael Larson, a junior music education and performance major from Amarillo; Zach Limb, a senior music education major from Midland; Daniel Cera, a senior music education major from Amarillo; Emanuel Garcia, a junior music education major from Dumas; Emily Sotelo, a graduate music performance student from Midland; Adam Johnson, a senior music education major from Springtown; Gallilea Martinez, a sophomore music performance major from Amarillo; Micah Carter, a senior music education major from Houston; Spencer Owens, a senior music education major from Levelland; Cristofer Gaspar, a freshman music education major from Amarillo; Taylor Martindell, a sophomore music technology major from Amarillo; Brandon Trinh, a senior music performance major from Frisco; Catherine Dockery, a junior music therapy major from Wichita Falls; David Romo, a senior music education major from Amarillo; Payton Hayes, a junior music education major from Midland; and Mason McWest, a junior music education major from Amarillo.
Jazz Band II-under the direction of Barger- will perform "Well You Needn't" by Thelonious Monk and arranged by Mark Taylor, "Song for My Father" by Horace Silver and arranged by Ian McDougall, "Woikin' It" by Mike Tomaro, "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" by Charles Mingus and arranged by Sy Johnson, "Haitian Fight Song" by Mingus and arranged by Andrew Homzy, and "Blue Rondo a la Turk" by Dave Brubeck and arranged by Kris Berg.
Members are Aaron Erickson, a graduate music performance student from Georgetown; Adrian Perez, a freshman music education major from Laredo; Orlando Moreno, a junior music technology major from Stamford; Coby Mount a senior music education and composition major from Midland; Trace Freeman, a freshman music education major from Crosbyton; Adrian Padilla, a freshman music education major from Midland; Diego Arias, a junior music education major from Amarillo; Traycee Stewart, a freshman music education major from Bowie; Kevin Olivas, a sophomore digital media and communications major from Amarillo; James Selman, a senior music education major from Amarillo; Cyrus Jackson, a senior music education major from Baytown; Cayden Chazarreta, a sophomore music education major from Fort Worth; Victor Vargas, a freshman music composition major from Dumas; Emily Sotelo, a graduate music performance student from Midland; Dax Griffin, a junior music education major from Amarillo; Ezekiel Luera, a freshman music education major from Fort Worth; and Mason McWest, a junior music education major from Amarillo.
Fosterin an appreciation of the arts is a key component of the University's long-range plan, WT 125: From the Panhandle to the World.
That plan is fueled by the historic One West comprehensive fundraising campaign, which reached its initial $125 million goal 18 months after publicly launching in September 2021. The campaign's new goal is to reach $175 million by 2025; currently, it has raised more than $160 million.
