Drug Dealer Arrested in Sheriff's Office's First Homicide Case for Fenantyl Poisoning

On August 17, 2024, a Sacramento County resident tragically died from Fentanyl poisoning after ingesting what they believed were recreational drugs. A Detective from the Sheriff's Special Investigations Bureau (SIB), who is also a member of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Fentanyl Overdose Response Team (FORT), launched an investigation where they learned the victim purchased drugs from 25-year-old Luke Eckes. Detectives executed a search warrant at Eckes' residence and discovered multiple M30 Percocet pills, which are commonly laced with Fentanyl. Eckes admitted to knowing the victim, selling the victim Fentanyl, and admitted to possibly overdosing on the same drugs he sold the victim days prior.

This morning, Detectives arrested Eckes for homicide. Eckes was transported to the Sacramento County Main Jail, where he remains ineligible for bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on December 19.

This case is the first Sheriff's Office homicide arrest that was caused by Fentanyl poisoning. "I am proud our Detectives have reached this major milestone in its fight against the devastating impact of fentanyl poisoning in our community, marking a significant step in holding those who distribute this deadly drug accountable," said Sheriff Jim Cooper. "This case reflects the Sheriff's Office's unwavering commitment to combating the fentanyl epidemic, which has claimed too many lives and shattered countless families."

The Sheriff's Office extends its gratitude to the public for their support and encourages continued vigilance.
