NYC PARKS REOPENS ST. JAMES RECREATION CENTER WITH FREE FAMILY FUN FOR THE BRONX COMMUNITY

Activities included games, sports, arts & crafts, and a tour of the renovated facility.

Over the weekend, First Deputy Commissioner Iris Rodriguez joined Bronx Borough President, Vanessa Gibson, Councilmember Pierina Sanchez, Community Board 7 District Manager Karla Cabrera, and community members to celebrate the reopening of the St. James Recreation Center. The center has been closed since 2021, after severe flooding from Hurricane Ida caused structural damage. Parks has since completed extensive repairs and redesigned the center's entryway for storm resiliency.

"Reopening the St. James Recreation Center is a significant milestone for the Bronx community, especially after the devastating impact of Hurricane Ida in 2021. Recreation centers like St. James play a crucial role in bringing people together, providing a safe and welcoming space for fitness, learning, and community events," said Bronx Borough Commissioner Jessenia Aponte. "With this reopening, St. James Recreation Center can once again be the heart of the neighborhood, offering vital programs and opportunities for residents of all ages. NYC Parks is committed to revitalizing and maintaining top-tier recreation centers, ensuring that Bronx communities have access to high-quality facilities that foster connection and well-being."

During the celebration, the Bronx community had the opportunity to explore the newly renovated facility, discovering all the updated features and amenities, including fitness equipment, interior/exterior painting, a nursery with new flower beds, and more. The day was filled with a diverse range of activities designed to entertain and engage all ages. Children enjoyed participating in games and sports, while adults and kids alike got creative with arts and crafts.

The event also included various interactive stations and demonstrations that showcased the center's new offerings.

After the flooding, recent renovations of the building include repairing the HVAC system and replacing the mechanical equipment. To help with future storm events, a higher concrete curb was constructed at the front of the building to elevate the opening. This will help prevent water entering in the recreation center.

The St. James Recreation Center reopened to the public on Monday, July 22, 2024, and is open Monday through Saturday schedule from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
