Walker Edison Crafts a Data-Driven Future with Domo and NetSuite

Walker Edison, a leading supplier of ready-to-assemble furniture, first onboarded with Domo in 2014. Back then, the company used QuickBooks for financial reporting. As Walker Edison grew, it needed a more powerful enterprise resource planning (ERP) system and invested in NetSuite.

NetSuite brings robust ERP capabilities, but the business also needed tools for comprehensive financial analysis. That's where Domo made a difference.

Walker Edison integrated Domo's reporting capabilities into NetSuite's master planning system-and transformed its financial reporting, taking the company from reactive reports to proactive insights. Through this strategic move, Walker Edison now enjoys improved financial insights, better customer service, and optimized supply chain logistics, showcasing the power of combining Domo and NetSuite.

We sat down with Boyd Kezerian, chief supply officer, and Prajwal Nagaraju, senior data engineer, to learn how Domo supercharged Walker Edison's NetSuite investment.

What data challenges led you to use Domo and NetSuite?

We started with Domo while still using QuickBooks and quickly realized we needed a more robust ERP system. QuickBooks just wasn't sufficient for our data needs. At the time, it was such a glaring issue for us not to have a backend ERP system feeding into Domo.

We realized that investing in NetSuite was essential for our growing data needs. The integration with Domo turned out to be transformative, enhancing our ability to generate actionable reports and making our NetSuite investment worthwhile.

What are the main financial KPIs that you are looking at in Domo?

By using Domo, we can focus on several key financial KPIs. As an e-commerce business, real-time sales data is crucial for us. We analyze sales by category, item, customer, and region. Additionally, we track margin, promotional activity, and cost of goods.

With Domo, we can also visualize inventory data from the balance sheet. We cover the entire top end of the profit and loss statement (P&L), from sales to gross profit. Since NetSuite is our master system, all its data fields are available for visualization in Domo, empowering us to make data-driven decisions and optimize our financial health.

How are you using Domo and NetSuite for customer service?

We're using Domo and NetSuite to improve our customer service parts program. Two years ago, our parts program wasn't very robust. When a customer called about a damaged product, we often had to send whole unit replacements, which was expensive. Using NetSuite with Domo, we decreased whole unit replacements by monitoring and forecasting demand from customer service inquiries.

The feedback we receive from customer service is added back into NetSuite and Domo so we can look at inventory management and stocking to make sure we have the right amount of replacement parts available. That way, we can ship a $5 or $10 replacement part versus a $300 piece of furniture. This optimization has saved us $1.5 million annually by sending specific parts instead of entire units.

"Our parts program saw a significant improvement with the help of Domo and NetSuite. Previously, we had to send whole unit replacements for damaged products, incurring high costs. By monitoring and forecasting demand through Domo, we reduced whole unit replacements, saving $1.5 million annually."- Boyd Kezerian, chief supply officer

How do you monitor on-time deliveries and manage supply chain logistics using Domo and NetSuite?

We use NetSuite as our ERP system, which holds detailed invoice data. By integrating this with other data sources, such as our forecasting platform and ocean carrier data, we monitor and visualize key operational metrics, such as sales, cost of goods, and margin. This integration helps us look deeper into our operations and financial performance, ultimately optimizing our supply chain.

We use Domo to integrate various data sources, including purchase order (PO) data from NetSuite and shipping updates from our ocean carriers. This allows us to track the entire supply chain journey of our POs, from when we place them with suppliers to their arrival at our distribution centers.

We monitor KPIs, such as on-time delivery (OTD), to assess risk and ensure we manage our inventory effectively. This real-time visibility helps us optimize our supply chain and maintain accurate inventory valuations for financing purposes.

"Domo and NetSuite have brought an immense amount of detailed visibility to where bottlenecks are and where issues arise."
- Boyd Kezerian, chief supply officer

Do you use Domo to identify errors and reconcile reports?

We reconcile reports from our third-party logistics providers (3PLs) and distribution centers (DCs) with the data in NetSuite. This ensures our inventory counts match across systems. We don't typically need reconciliation for sales, but inventory management is crucial for us.

We use Domo to validate and reconcile cooperative agreements with big box retailers to ensure they don't exceed their allowed deductions from our invoices. For example, if our Ohio warehouse reports 900 units but NetSuite shows 1,000, we need to resolve that and investigate the cause.

So, what's next for Walker Edison?

Walker Edison's journey with Domo and NetSuite showcases just how powerful integrated data solutions can be. By combining Domo's advanced reporting with NetSuite's robust ERP system, they've optimized their financial management, strengthened customer service, and streamlined supply chain logistics. Now, Walker Edison is set to thrive even more.
