New Brunswick Youth Gain Valuable Skills Through LIT Summer Program

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ (September 5, 2024) - The Leaders in Training (LIT) Summer Program concluded its fourth year with a recent graduation ceremony at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center.

The program, which provides 50 local youth aged 14 to 18 with opportunities to explore career pathways, develop workplace skills, and engage in community service, has proven to be a valuable experience for participants.

Under the leadership of Youth Advocate Program's Director Rebecca Escobar, who also serves as the City Council President, students participated in workshops on civic engagement, wellness, community pride, leadership, and entrepreneurship. They earned $15 per hour for their participation.

"It is a privilege to be able to work with amazing New Brunswick youth, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and experiences that will help shape their future," Escobar said.

The Leaders in Training Summer Program could not be made possible without the financial commitment of DEVCO and Jingoli and Sons; as well as our community partners, including RWJ Barnabas Health, Middlesex College and many others.

A new partnership with Middlesex College offered students the chance to attend college prep workshops, obtain CPR certification, and earn college credits by taking a free public speaking class. In addition, this year, 25 of the 50 students enrolled in a Healthcare Hospitality Program at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, gaining hands-on experience in various departments.

"The Leaders in Training Program has provided these students with more than just skills, it has given them the foundation to become lifelong advocates for change, not just in New Brunswick, but wherever life takes them," Mayor Jim Cahill said.
