CITY OF ST. CLAIR SHORES STATEMENT REGARDING ELECTION CHARGES

On the night of the August primary as our City Clerk and Deputy City Clerk were taking the required steps to complete the election, they discovered four instances in which St. Clair Shores residents voted once in person and once via absentee ballot. The City Clerk's Office immediately reported their findings to State and County election officials.

In the following days, the potential of fraud was thoroughly investigated by St. Clair Shores Police Department. Detectives interviewed each voter as well as the circumstances that allowed the mistake to occur within the State's election system. The local investigation found that there was no criminal intent to break any of the laws that protect our elections.

When the evidence from the investigation was submitted to the County Prosecutor's Office, it was publicly stated again that there was no criminal intent and no charges would be filed against any individuals. At that time, we considered the matter investigated, reviewed by outside jurisdictions, and ultimately closed.

The City of Saint Clair Shores was surprised to learn this morning that Attorney General Dana Nessel would be pursuing charges against four residents and three part-time election workers in spite of local and county conclusions. It is our hope that an accurate accounting of the facts of this case are properly presented in court as we feel they will correct the public misstatements and discrepancies in AG Nessel's press conference.
