We hope you've been taking some time to relax and enjoy the sunshine this summer. If you're on the lookout for things to do, here's a few events to add to your calendar this month.

Get a scoop

Build your own sundae to enjoy in the July heat at the Norris ice cream social. Dairy-free options will be available.

The ice cream social is at 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 11, on the South Lawn of Norris University Center, 1999 Campus Drive, Evanston.

Medical music

The Northwestern Medical Orchestra presents its summer wind band concert, featuring fanfares, marches, classics and music from "Wicked."

The concert begins at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 12, in Thorne Auditorium 375 E. Chicago Ave. Register to attend in-person or watch via livestream.

Pro(se) tips

Dive into the finer points of prose alongside writers from around the globe during the Summer Writers' Conference. Deepen your understanding of the craft and business of writing with instruction from award-winning authors.

The conference will be held virtually on Friday, July 19, and Saturday, July 20. Learn more and register here.

No fretting

In "Airness," protagonist Nina enters her first air guitar competition, thinking that winning will be a cinch. But she soon discovers that there's more to this art form. Catch a performance for an exuberant reminder that everything we need to rock is already inside us.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 19; 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 20; and 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, at the Wirtz Center Theater, Abbott Hall, 701 N. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. Buy tickets here.

Solutions summit

Close out July by joining the Medill Midwest Solutions Journalism Hub for its summer summit. The all-day event will include keynotes, hands-on workshops, lightning talks and breakout sessions.

The summit begins at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, July 30, on the 16th floor of 303 E. Upper Wacker Drive, Chicago. Register for the free event here.

Research with ease

Learn about different aspects of the research process from the Office of Undergraduate Research through their virtual workshop series. July's topics include project time management, mentoring and more.
