UW Cowboys Keep on Rolling and Cowgirls Second Again at LCCC Rodeo

With the Central Rock Mountain Region (CRMR) fall season ending this weekend, both University of Wyoming men's and women's rodeo teams will enter the spring season among the region's top two clubs in their respective divisions.

The Cowboys won for the fourth consecutive time, placing first at the annual Shawn Dubie Memorial Rodeo hosted by Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne over the weekend. The UW men finished with 570 points, edging Casper College by 50 points. Eastern Wyoming College was third with 390.

Heading into the final rodeo at Lamar (Colo.) Community College, the Cowboys have 2,135 total points after four rodeos, while Casper College has 1,830 and Gillette College 1,255.

"The men's team competed well, but we faced a bit of adversity only having four of our six points team members qualify for the short round competition Sunday," UW second-year Coach Seth Glause says. "We took advantage of the opportunities we had and ended the weekend with the team win. I am proud of our student-athletes competing and capitalizing on Sunday."

The four Cowboys placing were:

-- Greybull's Colton Farrow continues to be the top bareback rider, wining for the third time this fall after posting a season-best 81 points in the short go to take the average.

-- Three-event place-winner Rhett Whitt, of Valentine, Neb., had a busy weekend. He split the opening round of steer wrestling to finish second in the event. He then added points in tie down roping and in team roping with partner Hadley Furnival, from Casper. Whitt was second in the all-around.

-- After posting the best short go time, Rio Nutter, of Rapid City, S.D., placed second in the tie down roping competition.

-- Dixon Tattrie, of Youngstown, Alberta, Canada, continued to score in saddle bronc riding, finishing fourth in the average.

Other UW Cowboys, who were not selected among the six-man points team, also placed over the weekend. Riverton's Brodie Bates won the bull riding competition, while teammate Stefan Tonita, from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, was the runner-up. Brothers Rowdy and Roan Weil, from Kersey, Colo., combined to win the team roping completion. Jaxson Mirabal, from Magdalena, N.M., placed sixth in steer wrestling.

The Cowgirls were second at LCCC with 225 points, while the Gillette College women won for the third time in four fall rodeos with 550. Third went to Chadron State College (CSC) with 155 points. The Pronghorns lead the CRMR with 1,978.3 points, while the Cowgirls trail in second place at 1,378.3. CSC is third in the standings at 570 points.

"The women's team competed well individually, and we were well represented in the short go, with 14 women's student-athletes qualifying in their respective events," Glause says.

Three of the four members of the Cowgirls points team placed:

-- Rayne Grant, of Wheatland, scored during both rounds of barrel racing to wind up third in the average.

-- Layni Stevens, from St. Lawrence, S.D., split the goat tying top time in the short go to split third in the average.

-- Riata Day, of Fleming, Colo., opened with goat tying's second fastest time but did not place in the overall average.

Three UW Cowgirls, who were not selected among the four-member points team, also placed at LCCC. Emme Norsworthy, of Thermopolis, took sixth in barrel racing. Halle Hlady, from Gillette, and Cheyenne's Jordyn McNamee were fourth and fifth place, respectively, in breakaway roping.

"We are proud of how our students are competing and performing this season," Glause says. "We look forward to a strong finish in Lamar, Colo., this weekend at the last rodeo of our fall season."
