Dallas Gears up to Enforce new Ordinance to Address Abandoned and Unregistered Vehicles
DALLAS - On Monday, August 19, the Dallas Transportation and Public Works Department will begin enforcing the City's ordinance regarding motor vehicles parked on city streets with expired or no registration. The ordinance is a result of concerns from residents about unregistered vehicles. Many of these vehicles were being repaired or damaged. As a result, vehicle fluids were flowing into the city's stormwater drains and debris was being left on the street and sidewalks. City staff investigated these concerns and determined some public streets was being used as long-term storage for these vehicles, causing a public safety hazard. A new city ordinance was proposed to the Dallas City Council to address this issue.
On Wednesday, August 14th, the city council approved an ordinancemaking it a violation to park a motor vehicle on a public street, highway or alley with expired or no registration, specifically:

Vehicles that do not display a current registration.

Vehicles with a registration expired for two months or longer.

Vehicles with a temporary license plate expired for 30 days or longer.
The Parking Management and Enforcement Division of the Transportation and Public Works Department will begin issuing warning citations from Monday, August 19, 2024 through Monday, September 3, 2024. After this period, regular citations will be issued. The fine amount is $45.
