The Basics of EDGAR Next and Steps to Take Now

The way SEC filers log in to EDGAR® is getting a makeover.

It's been years since the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval System (EDGAR) last had a major upgrade to login and password protocols.

Workiva is here to help customers navigate the change. Beginning March 24, 2025, SEC filers can start enrolling on the new SEC Filer Management website. That is something everyone will need to do before September 15, 2025, to set up their EDGAR Next accounts, add users, and submit filings to EDGAR-as well as delegate to filing agents like Workiva. This applies to all SEC filers, so not just operating companies but also foreign private issuers (FPI), funds, and Section 16 and Form 144 reporting owners, for example. It's also something to note if you are a private company planning to file a registration statement for an initial public offering or other capital markets transaction in the next several months.

Here's what to know-and more importantly, what to do-between now and then, with links to more details for Workiva customers.

What is EDGAR Next?

Think of EDGAR Next as the collective changes the SEC is adopting under rules to make the process of submitting filings more secure, modernize the APIs that SEC filing vendors like Workiva use to connect you to EDGAR, and help control who can submit filings.

Today, you and your filing agents might share one EDGAR login credential with everyone at your company (like how you may share streaming app logins and passwords). With EDGAR Next, individuals filing to EDGAR will use their own logins and an EDGAR Next user token.

Key dates

As of late September 2024, SEC filing agents like Workiva and individual filers have been able to access a beta software environment to test and offer feedback on the new EDGAR Filer Management website, dashboard, and beta versions of optional APIs for connecting to EDGAR. The SEC will use the feedback to fine-tune what your actual experience will eventually be like to file, either on your own or with a filing agent.

For now, keep in mind these dates:

  • The first day to start enrolling for EDGAR access is March 24, 2025, on the new SEC Filer Management website, where you will authorize who can manage your EDGAR accounts
  • Starting September 15, 2025, filers must have enrolled and will be required to use login.gov credentials and multifactor authentication to file
  • For the stragglers, December 19, 2025, is effectively your last day to enroll on the SEC Filer Management site

If SEC filers haven't enrolled as of Monday, December 22, 2025, they will need to submit a new Form ID registration to request access before being able to file.

While you must enroll by September 15, 2025, we encourage you to complete enrollment as soon as possible.

The time between March 24 and September 15, 2025, is a transition period when filers can submit using EDGAR Next or the old way with a password. After September 15, 2025, you will have to file via the EDGAR Next system.

So what do I need to do now?

  1. Log in to EDGAR now and check that contact information is correct for every CIK you control.
  2. Identify who should be authorized to submit SEC filings at your company, and have them obtain login.gov individual account credentials now. Then enroll your EDGAR accounts in EDGAR Next as soon as possible on or after March 24, 2025. Identify at least two people to be EDGAR Next administrators for your account. (You will still be able to file to EDGAR as you have been, but you will want to be fully enrolled and comfortable with EDGAR Next before September 2025.) To enroll, you will need your login.gov credentials plus the CCC and passphrase code for each of your EDGAR accounts or CIK numbers.
  3. Read more about what's ahead on sec.gov/edgar-next so you are prepared. (Workiva customers can check out more resources in the next section.)

Workiva has been working hard behind the scenes to make it easy for you to file to EDGAR no matter what.
