Sparks, NV
- The City of Sparks is inviting the community to help assemble emergency go-bags for 400 local seniors. These essential bags will provide critical resources to seniors in case of an emergency and are funded by an $11,900 AARP Community Challenge grant.

The event will be held on Wednesday, September 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sparks City Hall. "This is a great way to support our seniors and make sure they are prepared in case of an emergency," said Mayor Ed Lawson. "We're grateful for AARP's generosity and the opportunity to come together as a community to make a difference."

The go-bags, which will be distributed through Washoe County's Meals on Wheels program and the Sparks Fire Department, will contain items such as hygiene products, blankets, solar phone chargers, wind-up radios, flashlights, and first aid kits.

"These go-bags could be lifesaving," said Mayor Lawson. "Having emergency supplies ready to go is something every senior should have access to."

The City is working alongside partners such as Project Bear Hugs, Washoe County, the Sparks Senior Citizens Advisory Committee, and the Sparks Fire Department to ensure the success of the project.

The event is intentionally being held during National Preparedness Month, an annual campaign to remind people that preparing for emergencies and disasters can keep them, their families, and their communities safe. Sparks Fire personnel will be on hand to help educate seniors on emergency procedures and preparedness.

"We encourage the community to drop in anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to help," Mayor Lawson said. Lunch will be provided.
