Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responds to fire on Alfred Avenue and performs water rescue on Assiniboine River

Released: July 4, 2024 at 9:42 a.m.

Winnipeg, MB - The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) responded to a structure fire last night and performed a water rescue on the Assiniboine River.

Assiniboine River water rescue
At 10:18 p.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, WFPS crews responded to reports of an individual in the Assiniboine River, near the Assiniboine Park bridge. The reports indicated the individual was moving down the river with the current.

Crews staged strategically at points along the river to attempt to locate the individual and WFPS water rescue boats were launched. Crews worked with the Winnipeg Police Service and were aided by the WPS drone and Air-1.

A WFPS water rescue crew located the individual near Ferry Road and Park Boulevard North and brought them to safety. The patient was assessed and treated by paramedics, and then transported to hospital in stable condition. At this time, it is not known why the individual came to be in the water.

Residents are reminded to always use extreme caution around all Winnipeg waterways. With recent heavy rains, river levels are high and swift moving. There may be seen and unseen debris in the water.

Alfred Avenue fire
At 2:12 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, 2024, the WFPS responded to reports of a fire in a vacant, two-storey house in the 400 block of Alfred Avenue.

When crews arrived to the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house and a shed on the property. They entered the house and fought the fire from inside. The fire was declared under control at 2:45 a.m.

Crews completed a search of the house and no occupants were found. There were no injuries reported.

The fire is under investigation. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
