WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee voted to advance the nomination of Matthew J. Marzano to serve as a member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) by a vote of 10-9.
Prior to the vote, EPW Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.) spoke in support of Matthew J. Marzano:
"Matt understands the importance of deploying more safe and clean nuclear power … He has extensive technical expertise, gained over the course of a decade in the nuclear industry. Matt worked tirelessly with us… on both sides of the aisle… and with the minority staff [of this Committee] as well in order to move the ADVANCE Act [through the Senate] and to the President's desk, which was then signed into law. No other commissioner has this unique and valuable set of credentials that Matt possesses. I strongly believe that he would be, and will be if confirmed, a tremendous asset to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as it implements this critical bipartisan law, which we all voted for.
"… [T]he Nuclear Regulatory Commission is most effective and efficient when it has a full slate of commissioners to carry out its mission and provide certainty to the industry. With all of this in mind, I am pleased to support Matt's nomination, and I urge all of our colleagues to do the same."
In addition to advancing Matthew J. Marzano's nomination, the EPW Committee also voted to advance Matthew Kaplan's nomination as the Federal Co-Chair of the Great Lakes Authority, and to approve resolutions for 53 General Services Administration prospectuses.
