WCO Data Model Workshop Empowers Argentina Customs Officials

The World Customs Organization (WCO), with financial support from the Customs Cooperation Fund (CCF) of China, successfully held a workshop on the WCO Data Model in Buenos Aires, Argentina, from 5 to 9 August 2024. The event was designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of Customs officials, the VUCEA (Single Window of Argentina) Implementing Unit, and partner government agencies in adopting and implementing the WCO Data Model (WCO DM). The workshop focused on enabling the administration to develop a harmonized national data catalogue that fully aligns with the WCO DM as an international standard.

The event commenced with opening remarks from representatives of the General Directorate of Customs of Argentina and WCO experts, who welcomed participants and outlined the workshop's objectives. The Argentine Customs authorities highlighted the importance of the workshop for deepening the technical knowledge of the technical experts of the different agencies within the framework of the Single Window development.

Key sessions during the workshop included presentations on the strategic advantages of digitalization and standardization, an overview of the WCO Data Model and its building blocks, and guidance on implementing the WCO DM in various technological environments. The technical aspects of the WCO DM were covered, including its libraries, information packages, and main class levels. Participants also learned how to use the WCO Data Model App to facilitate the implementation process.

The workshop included practical exercises focused on Single Window data harmonization and business process management, particularly for processes related to Licences, Permits, Certificates and Others (LPCO). Specialized sessions included case studies on the VUCEA, cross-border e-commerce, CITES, and e-Phyto.

Concluding with a summary of key points and closing remarks, the workshop reiterated the importance of the WCO Data Model in streamlining and harmonizing Customs processes in Argentina. This event reflects the WCO's ongoing efforts to support its Members in modernizing their Customs operations through standardized data models, ultimately facilitating smoother and more efficient international trade.

The General Director of Argentina Customs, Eduardo Mallea, thanked the WCO experts for this crucial mission in Argentina and expressed his commitment to guarantee the implementation of the work plan agreed upon at the end of a week of intense work.
