Holiday Giving Tree results in 340 gifts for those in need

This year's Holiday Giving Tree, coordinated by University Staff Senate, resulted in 340 gifts for those who might otherwise not receive anything for the holidays.

For more than 25 years, Marquette has partnered with the United Way to ensure that hundreds of community members feel loved during the holiday season. This year, 340 members of the campus community participated.

That generosity benefitted community agencies:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee, which received 100 gifts from Marquette, creates and supports youth mentoring relationships that make a positive impact throughout our community.

Eras Senior Network

Eras Senior Network, which received 100 gifts from Marquette, is a nonprofit organization with the mission of engaging and supporting seniors, adults with disabilities and family caregivers in leading meaningful lives. Its programs reduce isolation for seniors and mobilize volunteers to make important contributions to community need.

Rooted & Rising in Washington Park

Rooted & Rising in Washington Park, which received 100 gifts from Marquette, resides in a Washington Park Neighborhood rich in history. A community that came to be through the development of both a county park and industrial growth, Washington Park carries a legacy of a diverse community of people from all walks of life, with the county park as a cornerstone of the community. But Washington Park faces challenges too, ones that reflect many other parts of the city of Milwaukee. With an unemployment rate of over 15%, and almost 50% of the population living below the poverty line, families in this neighborhood struggle with finding a sense of stability and hope.

Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers

Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers, which received 40 gifts from Marquette, provides the highest-quality medical, behavioral health, substance abuse, dental and physical therapy to every person who walks through their doors. What makes them unique is their deep understanding of social determinants of health.

About University Staff Senate

The University Staff Senate is a group of elected individuals who represent Marquette staff so that their views and interests may be considered, alongside those of faculty and students, in the conduct of institutional affairs that affect life in the workplace and in the advancement of the university's mission.
