New Permanent Representative of Spain Presents Credentials to the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva

Marcos Gómez Martínez, the new Permanent Representative of Spain to the United Nations Office at Geneva, today presented his credentials to Tatiana Valovaya, the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Mr. Gómez Martínez had been serving as Ambassador of Spain to the Russian Federation since November 2021. He was the Ambassador of Spain to Colombia in 2020 and 2021. He served as Director-General for the United Nations and Human Rights from 2018 to 2020. He also served as Consul General of Spain in Guangzhou in 2017 and 2018, and as Deputy Consul at the Consulate General of Spain in London from 2012 to 2017.

Mr. Gómez Martínez served as Ambassador for Polar and Oceanic Affairs in 2011 and 2012. He also served as Ambassador of Spain to New Zealand, cross-accredited to Fiji, Samoa, Tona and the Cook Islands from 2008 to 2011. Among other positions, he served as Foreign Policy Advisory in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister from 2004 to 2008; Human Rights Counsellor at the Spanish Mission to the United Nations Office at Geneva from 2001 to 2004; Counsellor at the Spanish Embassy to Argentina from 1998 to 2001; and Advisor in the Cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1998.

Mr. Gómez Martínez joined the Spanish Foreign Service in 1990. He trained as a lawyer, majoring in Spanish law, at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, and French law at the Université Paris-XI. Mr. Gomez Martinez is a certified translator for English and Russian. He is married with three daughters.
