Southbound Bangerter Highway to close in Riverton this weekend

Crews to close highway from 12600 South to 2700 West for utility work as part of new interchange construction

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is urging drivers to plan ahead for a closure of southbound Bangerter Highway from 12600 South to 2700 West this weekend (see map below).

Starting Friday, Aug. 16 at 9 p.m., crews will close the highway for utility work needed for new interchange construction. The highway will reopen in time for the morning commute on Monday, Aug. 19. During this time, the left turn from northbound Bangerter Highway to westbound 13400 South will also be closed.

Drivers should expect delays in the area and can use 12600 South and Redwood Road as alternate routes.

For more than a decade, UDOT has been working to eliminate stoplights on Bangerter Highway by converting intersections into interchanges. This year, UDOT is building interchanges at 13400 South, 9800 South, 4700 South and 2700 West.

Bangerter Highway is one of the valley's largest north-to-south corridors, moving an average of 60,000 vehicles per day. Removing stoplights and converting all intersections into freeway-style interchanges will enhance safety and help keep traffic moving in the ever-growing west side of the Salt Lake Valley.

UDOT has several other projects that could cause delays for drivers this weekend:

  • I-15 in South Salt Lake: Traffic near 2100 South on northbound I-15 will be reduced to one lane every night this weekend from 8 p.m. to 9 a.m. while crews replace concrete panels on bridges.
  • I-80 in South Salt Lake: Exit 122 (which connects to 2100 South, 1300 South and 900 South) will be closed on westbound I-80 from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night of this weekend for bridgework. Traffic will be reduced to one lane during the late hours of the project.
  • US-6 in Spanish Fork: US-6 will be reduced to a single lane in each direction at the 400 North Bridge in Spanish Fork from Sunday, August 18 through Thursday, August 22 for bridge repairs. Work will occur every day from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m. but lane closures will be in place throughout all hours, since crews are replacing the bridge deck.

Major delays should be expected. UDOT urges vacationers and commuters to use Spanish Fork Main Street to Canyon Road or SR-77 to US-89 as alternate routes to avoid major delays.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.
