Maximize your Oracle license investment with BYOL to Autonomous ...

In today's world, where the budgets are getting tighter, making the most out of your software investments isn't just a strategic advantage, it's a necessity. Oracle offers Bring Your Own License (BYOL) for your journey to the cloud. BYOL allows you to use your software licenses more efficiently and flexibly, enabling you to operate more within tighter budgets, reduce unnecessary costs, and allocate resources more strategically. Plus, it ensures that you maximize your return on investment, making the most out of your money!

Autonomous Database and BYOL

The best BYOL deal you're going to get is with the Autonomous Database. Autonomous Database is a 19c or 23ai Oracle database with all our most advanced features running on Exadata, which is the world's most optimized platform for running an Oracle database.

You get substantial savings on your totally cost of ownership (TCO) because BYOL lowers the price of Autonomous Database compute by 76%. Unlike BYOL to other Oracle Database cloud services, where you must bring licenses for every database option you use, BYOL to Autonomous Database provides almost all the options functionality without your having to bring option licenses. For the entire breakdown of how licensing works with Autonomous Database, refer to our Oracle PaaS and IaaS Universal Credits Service Descriptions.

To get the 76% lower BYOL price for Autonomous Database compute, BYOL has the following requirements:

  • Licenses must be unused elsewhere and have active support.
  • Licenses can be processor or Named User Plus (NUP) licenses.
  • Licenses can be perpetual, term or subscription based.
  • Licenses can be covered by an Unlimited License Agreement (ULA).
  • Licenses can be Full Use, Limited Use, Application Specific Full Use, or Proprietary Hosting. For Propriety Hosting, the cloud services retain the same restrictions as the licenses; but they cannot be Embedded Software Licenses.
  • You can aggregate different eligible license types together to cover the quantity needed.
  • You can also split a single license to cover multiple cloud service instances.

What licenses do I need?

Now for the Autonomous Database-specific rules. You can use either Oracle Database Enterprise Edition licenses or any of the Oracle Database Standard Edition licenses.

Oracle Database Enterprise Edition

Oracle Database Enterprise Edition includes the following features:

  • One processor license or 25 NUP licenses of Oracle Database Enterprise Edition is required for every eight ECPUs or two OCPUs of Autonomous Database.
  • If the Autonomous Database instance is more than 64 ECPUs or 16 OCPUs, one processor license or 25 NUP licenses of Real Application Clusters (RAC) is also required for every eight ECPUs or two OCPUs of Autonomous Database.
  • If you use Autonomous Data Guard for query access or reporting on the standby database, one processor license or 25 NUP licenses of Active Data Guard is also required for every eight ECPUs or two OCPUs of Autonomous Database for both the primary and standby databases.

Oracle Database Standard Edition

Oracle Database Standard Edition, including SE2, SE1, SE or Oracle Technology Foundation for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, which includes Oracle Database Standard Edition, has the following options for configuration:

  • One processor license of SE2, SE1, or SE is required for every 16 ECPUs or four OCPUs of Autonomous Database
  • 10 NUP licenses of SE2, SE1, or SE are required for every four ECPUs or one OCPUs of Autonomous Database
  • 10 Application User licenses of Oracle Technology Foundation for JD Edwards EnterpriseOne are required for every four ECPUs or one OCPUs of Autonomous Database.

When using any of the Oracle Database Standard Editions for BYOL, the maximum Autonomous Database instance is 32 ECPUs or eight OCPUs.

Recently, we made the following changes to make it even easier to use BYOL for Autonomous Database:

  • For Autonomous Database Serverless, you can now mix BYOL ECPUs and license-included ECPUs in the same database instance or elastic pool. Set how many ECPUs are BYOL and any of the factors to be billed at License-Included rates. You can change this configuration at any time. This great flexibility maximizes the value of all the licenses you have.
  • If you're using the Autonomous Data Guard feature for a standby database for disaster recovery but not accessing the standby for queries and reporting, you no longer need to bring Active Data Guard licenses when using Oracle Database Enterprise Edition.
