Horns, sirens and flashing lights had children grinning from ear to ear as thousands descended on Mitchell Park for the third instalment of Touch a Truck.

From a huge aviation fire truck to a little vintage Morris Minor, there were trucks and cars of all shapes and sizes at the Mitchell Park Sports and Community Centre (MPSCC).

The family-friendly event was bigger and better than ever with more than 40 trucks on display and a range of other activities.

Markets were also a feature of the event for the first time and extra food trucks were added after previous year's success.

John Aldridge attended with his grandchildren and said he was blown away by the scale of the event.

"It's a great reason to get the grandchildren out of the house and there's nothing younger people love more than trucks," he said.

"There's certainly no shortage of trucks here for them to have a look at."

The event got underway at 9.30am as thousands filled the MPSCC oval to get a closer look at their favourite vehicles.

The fire truck, police vehicles, defence force vehicles and sea squadron boat were among the most popular sites at the event with families queuing throughout the day to take a closer look.

Mayor of Marion Kris Hanna said it was a wonderful day.

"I can see all the happy faces around me, it's great to have Touch a Truck," Mayor Hanna said.

"I've got some critics that say all Council should do is pick up rubbish and fix the roads and that's it.

"I'm sorry, I disagree, we need to be having a good time and putting on events for free like this for our community."

It is estimated around 10,000 people attended the event throughout the day.

Marion Council thanks all emergency services and other organisations who gave up their time to participate in the event.
