Alumnu Confirmed to Serve on the NJ State Board of Education
Ahmed Shehata is a 2023 graduate of the Stillman School's M.B.A. in Business Analytics program.
Ahmed Shehata, M.B.A. '23, an alumnus of Seton Hall's Stillman School of Business, has been confirmed by the New Jersey State Senate to serve on the State Board of Education. Nominated by Governor Phil Murphy, Shehata has extensively contributed to the educational landscape, particularly through his roles in Clifton Public Schools and the Linden Board of Education.
Senate President Nick Scutari, a close friend and mentor of Shehata's, spearheaded the nomination and facilitated a swift confirmation process, which involved rigorous vetting, interviews and discussions with key stakeholders. During his testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Scutari emphasized Shehata's commitment to education and public service, further solidifying his suitability for the position. "This appointment is a significant milestone, and I am honored to serve and contribute to shaping the educational policies of our state," said Shehata, who reports he is now the youngest member on the State Board of Education and the youngest ever to serve in this capacity.
Shehata's credits his educational background - which includes an M.B.A. in Business Analytics from Seton Hall as well as a B.S. in Criminal Justice/Political Science and an M.P.A. from Rutgers University - as instrumental in his professional development. "The analytical skills and strategic thinking I developed at Seton Hall during my M.B.A. program have been invaluable," he said. "Courses on data analysis, decision-making and strategic management provided me with a solid foundation to approach complex educational challenges with a data-driven mindset."

As the Assistant Superintendent of Business (CFO) for Clifton Public Schools, Shehata's role involves managing more than 1,600 employees and leading all non-instructional facets of the district. "The ability to analyze trends, interpret data and make informed decisions has been crucial in my roles, both in Clifton Public Schools and now on the State Board of Education," he said. "The M.B.A. program's emphasis on leadership and ethical decision-making has shaped my approach to governance and policy development."
Shehata also chairs the finance and facility committees for the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC) in Clifton. In this key role, he manages a $170 million referendum covering 24 buildings and oversees educational programs from inception to implementation, as well as develops recruitment and training initiatives, and sets financial operational strategies with a $300 million budget.
In offering advice to current students, Shehata said, "Be sure to embrace every learning opportunity and seek experiences that challenge and expand your perspective. Develop a strong foundation in your field, but also cultivate skills in leadership, communication and critical thinking."
He also encouraged students to remain curious, embrace new ideas and take calculated risks, explaining, "Networking is crucial - build relationships with peers, mentors and professionals in your industry. Don't be afraid to send that email, Facebook or LinkedIn message." He cited examples of "cold messaging" successful people who later became long-time friends and mentors.
He also stressed the importance of always acting with integrity, adding, "Your education at Seton Hall provides a strong platform; use it to drive meaningful change in your career and community and a commitment to making a positive impact."
Shehata recognizes the significance of his appointment to the New Jersey State Board of Education, viewing it as a pivotal moment in his career.
