Domestic Violence Awareness Month Events Scheduled at UW

Educational events are scheduled at the University of Wyoming this month to mark Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an opportunity to learn, engage and unite in preventing dating and domestic violence and to support survivors. As part of its commitment to create a safe and inclusive community, the Sexual Misconduct Response Team invites the UW campus community to explore events and resources designed to raise awareness and to promote healthy relationships and help prevent sexual and interpersonal violence.

The Sexual Misconduct Response Team believes that: healthy relationships respect boundaries; violence is not tolerated, and everyone is expected to do their part in preventing it; and most people at UW want to intervene when noticing sexual and interpersonal violence, according to a recent campus climate survey.

Among events scheduled at UW are:

-- Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 23-24: UW Giving Day. The UW community is urged to consider providing a gift to the UW Student Survivor Emergency Fund. In past years, these gifts have been used for video camera doorbells, medication, car covers, counseling and other emergency expenses. The campaign link goes live at noon Wednesday, Oct. 23.

-- Thursday, Oct. 24: The Violence Prevention Center, in partnership with the Associated Students of UW (ASUW), will recognize Green Dot Day of Action and Purple Thursday. Educational tables will be available in the Wyoming Union breezeway, and activities geared toward enhancing bystander intervention skills will be provided. Green Dot instructors will be available to discuss the 3 Ds -- direct, distract and delegate. ASUW volunteers and the Violence Prevention Center personnel also will be available to promote dating/domestic violence awareness through activities and games.

-- UW students can register for the next Green Dot student bystander training from 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, by going here. Employees are encouraged to email Bob Vines, violence prevention coordinator, about department and employee trainings at [email protected].

Other activities throughout October recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month are planned. For updates, follow UW Violence Prevention Instagram.
