Tajani opens the inaugural event of the World Energy Fusion Group at the Farnesina

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, will open the inaugural ministerial event of the World Energy Fusion Group, established by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), tomorrow at the Farnesina.

The World Energy Fusion Group is being established for the first time in Rome, initiated by Italy and the IAEA. This group aims to bring together key representatives from various sectors, including public and private industries, academia, research institutions, and civil society. The goal is to foster collaboration in fusion energy research, development, and practical applications, ultimately accelerating the transition of fusion energy from its current research phase to commercial development.

The Group will serve as a catalyst during this critical time, emphasising the need to consolidate efforts for rapid advancements in fusion energy development, focusing on a few key topics, including:

  • Strengthening global cooperation by establishing coordination modes and spaces for interactive dialogue and exchange, as well as for planning and structuring partnerships among all stakeholders-including governments, the private sector, academia, research institutions, regulatory bodies, and civil society.
  • Enhancing the effectiveness of fusion energy research and development programs by utilising existing collaborations and facilities, while also exploring the potential for new ones.
  • Jointly identifying existing technological and engineering gaps and developing international strategies to find solutions.
  • Regulating fusion technology at the international level.
  • Encouraging public involvement with an emphasis on engaging younger generations and promoting gender equality.
  • Integrating fusion energy into the energy market.
  • Incorporating fusion energy into existing energy systems, along with the necessary supporting infrastructure.

The Italian government has established the "National Platform for Sustainable Nuclear Power" under the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security. This initiative aims to evaluate the potential for resuming nuclear energy use in Italy. The focus is on short- to medium-term applications using new nuclear fission technologies, as well as medium- to long-term prospects for fusion energy. This effort is part of a strategy to meet the 2050 decarbonisation targets and enhance the security and sustainability of energy supplies. The platform seeks to unify Italy's key expertise in the nuclear sector, involving operators, end users, universities, research centres, ministries, public agencies, and trade associations. It aims to coordinate various national initiatives in this field.
