‘Count Me In!’ Murfreesboro Special Census featured on “The Insider”

The City's "Count Me In"campaign to count every resident in Murfreesboro is featured this month on "The Insider" podcast. The City urges residents to visit www.murfreesborocensus.comto enter their address and names of everyone living in the household. A QR code for the link is also attached or residents can visit the City's website at www.murfreesborotn.govfor easy access to the Special Census portal where residents can follow the count!

Special Census Coordinator Malia Grubbs and Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston discuss how easy it is to be counted through the online portal or by filling out the postcard mailed to all households in the City limits this month. The Special Census will ensure an accurate count of residents, certify the City's growth in population, and secure its full allocation of State-shared revenue, based on population.

This edition of Insider features:

  • The anticipated population count for the 2025 Special Census, based on growth, is (170,000) and the population count in the last 2020 Federal Census (152,769 certified). The City has grown significantly since 2020 with permits issued for 7,600 residential units
  • The information the City needs to verify the population: your physical address, how many live there, first and last names of everyone in the household, and how you heard about the Special Census. It only takes a minute
  • How the information is used and how secure it is; the information is not sold or shared with anyone except the Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC), the recognized auditing agency for auditing the count. The City is required to audit the count and is prohibited by law for using the information for other purposes
  • The multiple marketing activities the City is engaged in to make sure the City counts everyone including GIS, online website portal, QR code, social media, Parks and Schools events, City ambassadors, postcard mailer, partnerships, door-to-door count
  • The benefit of a higher population count adds City State-shared revenue. 20,000 more residents would increase the City's shared-revenue by $3.75 million annually for offsetting expenses for roads, parks, schools, public safety, and other City services
  • A Door-to-door campaign will be conducted by Murfreesboro Rescue firefighters to seek information from those unresponsive to online or mail efforts. The data can be collected then. Firefighters will also check homes for properly operating smoke detectors and provide one if needed.
  • The most challenging populations for the City to count, including off-campus MTSU students, residents living in group homes, multifamily rental units, English as a second language residents, will receive extra attention
  • There is a March 1deadline for the City to complete the Special Census, so that a GNRC audit and certification can be completed for submittal to the State via the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at University of Tennessee Knoxville, where a database of business and population statistics is maintained for the State
  • Those who fill out the Census will be eligible for drawings for a $100 gift card, Nov. 27, Jan. 3, and Feb. 14. The earlier you participate, the more chances you have of winning. Check the website for winners!

"If one assumes that each household averages 2.3 people, we could conclude that we will have added at least 20,000 new residents since the 2020 federal census," said Assistant City Manager Sam Huddleston. "Not knowing exactly what the number will be, let's say the grand total is roughly 170,000 people living in Murfreesboro from the 2025 Special Census, that number amounts to an additional $3.7 million in State shared revenue per year."
