Dallas Sanitation Crews Continue Collection of Debris from the May 28 Windstorm

DALLAS - The Department of Sanitation has completed its first pass through Dallas for storm debris collection 10 days ahead of the previously stated goal. A second pass for collection of storm debris is underway and is focused on areas serviced in the first two weeks after the storm. Many residents in those areas were not able to place debris at the curb before Sanitation crews serviced their locations. The second pass for other areas will coincide with regular brush and bulky item collection in August.

As part of the second pass, regular brush and bulky item collection service is resuming immediately. Following the May 28 windstorm, Sanitation had asked customers to hold non-storm-related brush and bulky items until storm debris collection was complete. Residents can place up to 30 cubic yards of regular brush, bulky items and storm debris near the curb at no cost until September 1.

To date, Dallas Sanitation crews and contractors have collected approximately 500,000 cubic yards of debris since the windstorm. For comparison, this is more than four times the volume collected during the same time period in 2023 (May 29 - July 18), and 175,000 cubic yards more than was collected in the 60 days following the tornado in October 2019. To expedite the collection of the remaining storm debris and regular brush and bulky items, Sanitation has ordered additional contract crews to assist with the added workload. These additional crews will also help Sanitation stay on schedule with the higher-than-normal volume of regular brush and bulky item materials expected in August.

Code Compliance and Sanitation will host a special neighborhood trash-off event so residents can drop off bulky items. No hazardous waste (batteries, oil, paint or liquid waste) will be accepted. The trash-off event will be held on August 3, between 7-11 a.m., at Glendale Park, 1600 E. Five Mile Pkwy.
