Take care of your mental health with CSULB's 2024 resource guide

World Mental Health Day is Oct. 10, a time to raise awareness of mental health issues globally and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. With Cal State Long Beach's fall semester in full swing, stress levels can vary in different situations. It's important to check in on your mental health (and that of your friends and colleagues) and know you're not alone at The Beach.

This guide includes helpful information about wellness resources and events for the entire campus community.

Beach Wellness

Beach Wellness is a one-stop shop with health and wellness resources, including Crisis and Mental Health Resources like Find Help Now, and Beach Crisis Text Line available 24/7. Additionally, the Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation for Students Team (CARES) provides non-clinical case management for students experiencing a broad range of distress, and the Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation for Students (CARES) Teamprovides a humanistic response to individuals experiencing a mental health and/or behavioral health crisis.

Student Recreation and Wellness Center

Exercise can help improve mental health! In addition to providing a space where not only students, but Beach employees, alumni and affiliates can exercise, the Associated Students, Inc. Student Recreation and Wellness Center offers Beach Balance Daily Wellness Activities, group exercise classes including flow yoga, massage therapy and more. Student Resources

Student Health Services

Student Health Services (SHS) is an on-campus clinic resource with many health programs and services to support physical, mental health and wellness. For more information, call (562) 985-4771 or email Student Health Services.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

CAPS provides support for students facing mental health concerns and challenges. Services offered at CAPS include short-term individual counseling that follow a brief model, group counseling, case management to connect students to long term counseling and/or psychiatry, psychoeducational workshops and same day support where students in distress can walk in or call in to speak with a counselor.

Project OCEAN (On-Campus Emergency Assistance Network)

The mission of Project OCEAN (On-Campus Emergency Assistance Network) is to educate the campus on suicide prevention and promote a climate that reduces the stigma associated with mental health and mental illness and encourages students to seek help when needed. The Project OCEAN team offers students mental health resources, trainings, workshops, events and peer-to-peer programs.

Financial Health

The Financial Literacy 101 user-friendly platform empowers students by providing essential tools and knowledge to manage their finances effectively. Interactive lessons on budgeting, saving, and investing helps students build confidence in their financial decisions and can help reduce stress and anxiety, contributing to better mental health. Students can use the code CSULB-ALL to gain free access for life to this resource.

Employee Resources

Mental Health Support Simulations

Available 24/7 in English and Spanish, this new immersive and simulated training experience is for CSULB faculty and staff. Players can practice active listening, empathy and can learn how to refer students to appropriate campus resources through lifelike campus simulations.

Wellbeing Asynchronous Learning

The MyBeach site is available for staff and faculty as a learning and development resource. The topics for on-demand 24/7 learning include wellness, happiness, stress management, building self-confidence, resilience, avoiding burnout and embracing failure.

Wellness Events

  • Oct 10. World Mental Health Day - Fun Theory: Students can celebrate World Mental Health Day by participating in activities such as writing a positive message on a mental health pledge tree, creating friendship bracelets and learning more about wellness resources. This event will be held at the ASI Beach Kitchen and free hot dogs and chips will be provided. Free flu shots will also be available.
  • Beach Wellness Events & Training Sessions: From lunch & learns to wellness ambassador trainings, the Beach community can take part in a variety of events and training opportunities.
  • Community Drop-In Spaces: Rainbow Cafe, Sticky Rice at The Beach, Spoon Check, Buddies Connect at The Beach, Latinas at The Beach, Thoughtful Thursday and Sisterfriends are drop-in spaces available to students where they can connect, feel a sense of community and receive support. No appointment is required and students can join at any time!
  • Let's Talk Drop-in Spaces: BMAC Let's Talk, Black Talk, and Let's Talk are spaces that allow students to meet with a CAPS counselor for a brief and informal discussion. This is a great starting point for students who might be considering counseling or would like to learn more about resources. No appointment is required, but students may RSVP by using the CAPS website. Students are served on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • QPR Suicide Prevention Training: Become a QPR gatekeeper this semester! QPR stands for question, persuade and refer. The free certification is only two hours and available for CSULB students, staff and faculty.
  • Zen Yoga in the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden: This class is held on Wednesdays and Fridays. It's open to all levels and beginners are welcome. Students can attend for free, and it's $5 for staff, faculty, and EBMJG members, and $10 for the public. Registration is required.
  • Sound Bathing in the Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden: This healing experience includes a short, guided mediation, chakra balancing singing bowls, and Reiki. A session is $20 for EBMJG members and $25 for the public. No experience is required. Reserve a spot online!
  • Beach Employee Events: Beach employees can join virtual sessions from the LifeMatters series virtual events like The Stress-Sleep Correlation on Oct. 15, Happy (Affordable) Holidays on Nov. 12 and Building Self-Esteem Through Positive Self-Talk on Dec. 17. The CSU's Got Talent Nov. 13 Outsmarting Impostor Syndrome: How to Own Your Zone of Brilliance with More Confidence and Less Stress Zoom meeting is also available to staff and faculty.
  • Cross-Campus Collaboration Virtual Learning: Staff and faculty can attend professional development virtual workshops with CSU systemwide colleagues. Some courses include Breath and Health, Weekly Dose of Mindfulness and The Five Elements of Wellbeing. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
