How to Avoid Single-Use Plastic in Everyday Life

The City's Environmental Advisory Commission's (EAC) goals include educating the community about important issues, and single-use plastic is one of the greatest challenges we face.

Plastic bags never go away, but turn into little pieces of plastic that live on in soil, air, water, and bodies. These microplastics can become a potential health risk for wildlife and humans.

What can we do? We can make a difference by changing our habits:

  • don't use single-use bags, straws, and utensils
  • change buying habits to avoid plastic
  • choose products packaged in glass, metal, paper, or other more natural materials

Learn more about the peril of plastics in this article from the National Park Service, "I Didn't Know That!: Ocean Plastics." According to the article, up to 90% of trash floating in the ocean and littering our shores is plastic, from everyday products such as disposable water bottles and plastic grocery bags, to microplastics and microfibers.
