Sustainable transport builds strong, inclusive and connected communities, enabling access to essential services like education, healthcare and economic opportunities. It drives robust economies, providing jobs, supporting livelihoods and reducing poverty, while reinforcing resilience.
IRU Secretary General Umberto de Pretto said, "On behalf of the IRU family, we wish everyone a happy World Sustainable Transport Day. Advancing sustainable and efficient transport requires collaboration with users, companies and governments across all modes."
"Trucks, vans, buses, coaches and taxis are the bedrock of communities and economies globally, connecting people and businesses across villages, towns, countries and continents. As a vital enabler of safe and efficient connectivity, road transport is essential to advancing the core pillars of sustainable development. We look forward to continuing to drive sustainable mobility and trade," he added.
The UN General Assembly adopted the resolution to designate a UN World Sustainable Transport Day at its 77th session in May 2023. The resolution, put forward by the government of Turkmenistan, followed IRU's initial proposal for a dedicated World Transport Day.
IRU has created a dedicated World Sustainable Transport Day website providing ready-to-use and customisable social media packages to help everyone celebrate this important day.
