NOPD Announces Preliminary Crime Statistics for September 8-14, 2024

The following is a weekly report of citywide crime statistics compiled by the NOPD Analytics Unit for the period of September 8-14, 2024.

Notable arrests made

During the listed week, the NOPD also made the following notable arrest(s):

  • On September 8, 2024, the NOPD arrested Justin A. Martin (white male, DOB: 05-22-1977) in connection with a domestic battery incident that occurred in the 3200 block of Bienville Street. During this incident, an NOPD officer discharged their firearm. The suspect, later identified as Martin, sustained a gunshot wound injury. Upon release from medical care, Martin was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for battery on a dating partner (strangulation), resisting arrest and for aggravated assault against a police officer. The NOPD Public Integrity Bureau's Force Investigation Team is investigating the officer discharge portion of this incident. Both the Independent Police Monitor (IPM) and the Federal Consent Decree Monitor were on scene to oversee and monitor the investigation.

Gun arrests (arrests made under LA RS 14:95 and sub-items)

Year to date, the NOPD has made 339 arrests for illegal possession of a firearm. This is a 43-percent decrease compared to 590 arrests made during the same period in 2023.

Gun seizures

Additionally, as of September 10, the NOPD in 2024 had seized 1,620 firearms in criminal investigations, a 21-percent decrease compared to 2,502 such seizures made during the same period in 2023.
