Upon arrival to the scene, crews saw flames and smoke coming from the building. They launched an offensive fire attack, using hose lines to put the fire out. The fire was knocked down at 1:33 p.m.
Some residents self-evacuated before crews arrived on scene, while others were able to shelter in place.
Firefighters searched the building and helped bring one person out. Paramedics assessed the person at the scene, and transported them to hospital in critical condition.
Multiple cats were also located during the search. The City of Winnipeg's Animal Services Agency was called to provide care for two cats who were injured in the fire.
The City of Winnipeg's Emergency Social Services teamwas deployed to assist displaced residents find a temporary place to stay.
The fire caused smoke and water damage to multiple suites. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
