Peters, Stabenow Applaud More Than $25 Million in Federal Funding for a Multi-Modal Transportation Network in Kalamazoo

WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Senators Gary Peters and Debbie Stabenow applauded a $25 million investment from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to rebuild five street segments in the City of Kalamazoo, helping to create a connected multi-modal transportation network in the downtown area. Segments include West Michigan from Douglas to Michigan, South from Stadium to South Pitcher, Lovell from Stadium to Portage, Stadium from Lovell to Michigan, and Douglas from Kalamazoo to West Michigan. The project will also convert these segments from one-way to two-way streets.

Funding for the projects comes from the DOT's Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program, which was established through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law the senators helped enact. Peters and Stabenow also supported the City of Kalamazoo's application for this federal funding.

"These are critical infrastructure upgrades that are necessary to reconnect our communities and enhance safety for those who walk, bike, or drive in downtown Kalamazoo," said Senator Peters. "I'm proud to have supported the City of Kalamazoo's efforts to secure this funding, which will support both economic and residential growth."

"This investment will modernize and improve Kalamazoo's streets making them safer and more accessible for our community. Kalamazoo has been working to create a transportation system that works effectively for our businesses and families, and this grant builds on this effort," said Senator Stabenow.

These grant projects were awarded as part a $1.8 billion funding announcement from the DOT's RAISE program, which supported more than 148 projects across the country. More information about the RAISE program can be found here.
