Published on September 09, 2024

The Unified Government is planning a series of mobility improvements for the 6th Street and Armstrong Avenue corridors. The project includes upgrades in traffic and pedestrian safety and the construction of a two-way, on-street bicycle path.

Residents are invited to an open house-style public meeting on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the KCK Main Branch Public Library, 625 Minnesota Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas, 66101. Attendees can stop by anytime between 4:30 and 6:30 PM to review project details. No formal presentation will be made, and project representatives will be available to answer questions.

The project covers improvements along 6th Street (Central Avenue to Armstrong Avenue) and Armstrong Avenue (6th Street to 4th Street). It will be completed in two phases.

Phase 1

  • This phase includes ADA-compliant upgrades, new sidewalks, updated signage and markings, and general maintenance of the corridors.
  • Funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Phase 1 is expected to be advertised for bid in 2024, with construction starting in 2025.

Phase 2

  • In addition to the upgrades included in Phase 1, Phase 2 will feature a two-way, on-street bicycle path along the west side of 6th Street between Ann Avenue and Riverview/6th Street Trafficway.
  • This phase has secured both local and federal funding and is projected to be advertised for bid in 2026.

Residents and business owners are encouraged to attend the open house to learn more about how these projects will improve mobility and safety in their community.
