Premier’s statement on Muharram

VICTORIA - Premier David Eby has issued the following statement on Muharram:

"Muslims in British Columbia and around the world mark the beginning of a new year today at sundown.

"The first month of the Islamic calendar is a sacred time of peace. Muharram is marked by prayers and contemplation as Muslims gather to mourn Hazrat Imam Hassain Ibn Ali, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

"The holy month of Muharram is a time of reflection and gratitude for all one has been through in the past year with hope for brighter days ahead.

"Muharram reminds us all of the importance of sacrifice, justice, respect and community. These are the shared values that help all of us persevere through difficult times.

"May all those who celebrate have a blessed Muharram."
