Installation Complete of New Accessible Kayak Launch and Dock on Zink Lake

10/4/2024

Installation of a new accessible dock, located on the East Bank of Zink Lake near 19th and Riverside Dr., is complete and ready for users of all mobility levels to enjoy.
Funded through Improve Our Tulsa, the new dock accommodates water access to individuals of all abilities and enhances inclusive water recreation on Zink Lake.
The dock is designed by BoardSafe, a company with more than 20 years of experience creating docks with a best-in-class adaptive kayak launch, that helps increase dignity and freedom for individuals with mobility issues, while increasing accessibility and participation in water sports for adaptive paddlers. The adaptive kayak launch features:
  • A gangway that offers adaptive paddlers a way of moving to land from the launch areas that meets ADA slope requirements and features;
  • A parallel kayak chute large enough to accommodate kayaks with outriggers, a device that attaches to the side of a kayak to increase its stability and reduce the likelihood of tipping over;
  • An aluminum-welded floating dock offering sufficient space to maneuver a wheelchair and allow room for additional wheelchairs to be left on the deck;
  • A tiered boarding bench that allows the user to board from their wheelchair and includes a roll cage that surrounds the bench;
  • And more.
Kayak rentals will also be available at this location beginning today. Rentals are available every day from 10 a.m. until sunset.
The City will host demonstrations of how to properly use the dock and kayak launch on Wednesday, October 9 at 6 p.m. in partnership with the Dustbowl Chapter of the Arkansas Canoe Club, the Broken Arrow Veteran Center, and Wednesday Night Paddle Club. Media and the public are invited to attend the demonstrations.
This project is made possible through coordination between the City of Tulsa and River Parks Authority.
