OMAHA, Neb. - The National Park Service (NPS) has selected Kevin Young as the superintendent of George Washington Carver National Monument located in Diamond, Missouri. Young is currently serving as the acting superintendent at the park and is permanently the superintendent at Washita Battlefield National Historic Site in Cheyenne, Oklahoma. He will assume his new role at the monument later this summer.

"I am pleased to announce Kevin Young as the next superintendent of George Washington Carver National Monument," said NPS Midwest Regional Director Bert Frost. "He has over a decade of experience working for the NPS and has worked in a number of different parks. This background will serve the park and surrounding communities well as he moves into this position."

George Washington Carver National Monument was established to maintain and preserve the Carver birthplace as a public memorial to honor his contributions to society. This was the first time in U.S. history that a birthplace site was designated as a national monument to someone other than a U.S. president, and the first time a unit of the national park system was established to honor the contributions of an African American.

Young brings over 13 years of NPS experience. He began his career working as a maintenance mechanic and electrician at Yellowstone National Park in 2006 before joining the Department of Veterans Affairs as a utility systems operator and later electrician for Overton Brooks Medical Center in Shreveport, Louisiana, all the while owning and operating his own contracting company. In December 2011 Young returned to the NPS as a maintenance mechanic supervisor at Ozark National Scenic Riverways in Van Buren, Missouri, before utilizing his facility operations expertise at Amistad National Recreation Area from 2017-2019. He has experience serving as acting Oklahoma State Coordinator/ Superintendent at Chickasaw National Recreation Area, in addition to being the Superintendent at Washita Battlefield National Historic Site.

"I'm excited to join the staff at George Washington Carver National Monument in preserving the legacy of such a distinguished scientist, educator, and humanitarian," Young said. "I look forward to working with staff and partners to educate people on the life of Carver and inspire future generations to be humble, determined, and hardworking while facing life's challenges."

Kevin and his wife Lauren of over 45 years are proud parents to three adult kids and enjoy spending time with their five grandkids. He enjoys the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and raising chickens on his small farm. But most of all he enjoys helping other people.
