ARUP’s Innovation Business Unit Receives Honorable Mention From Utah Business Magazine Innovation Awards

ARUP Laboratories received an Honorable Mention from the Utah Business magazine Innovation Awards for its forward-looking Innovation Business Unit. This new unit brings together several vital divisions within ARUP to accelerate innovative developments in laboratory medicine and continually improve patient care.

"We are deeply honored to receive this recognition from Utah Business magazine, which acknowledges the important work ARUP is doing to push the boundaries of diagnostic medicine," said Tracy George, MD, ARUP's chief scientific officer and president of ARUP's Innovation Business Unit. "With our academic roots, a commitment to providing excellent patient care, and a focus on continuous improvement, innovation is woven into the fabric of ARUP."

ARUP received the Honorable Mention in the Research category during a luncheon on August 8, 2024, in Salt Lake City. All Innovation Awards honorees are featured in the August issue of Utah Business magazine.

The Innovation Awards nominees were judged on their novelty, economic impact, and disruption of the status quo, according to Melanie Jones, editor-in-chief of Utah Business magazine. What all Innovation Awards finalists have in common "is their willingness and ability to think outside the box, explore new horizons, and serve market needs," she said.

ARUP created its Innovation Business Unit in 2023 to leverage ARUP's vast experience in clinical reference lab testing toward collaborative, industry-leading research projects for partners in both life sciences and academia. The Innovation Business Unit has the academic support of renowned medical directors who are faculty at the University of Utah.

Several ARUP divisions were brought under the umbrella of the Innovation Business Unit to form a dynamic, cohesive, and success-driven organization. These divisions include:

• The ARUP Institute for Research and Innovation in Diagnostic and Precision Medicine™ (R&I Institute), which investigates emerging diagnostic and prognostic technologies that have significant potential to improve the lives of patients. The R&I Institute, created in 2023, is already forming key partnerships with life science industry leaders.
• The PharmaDx and Clinical Trials groups, which recently received FDA approval for the companion diagnostic test AAV5 DetectCDx™, the first companion diagnostic immunoassay approved for a gene therapy.
• The ARUP Institute for Clinical and Experimental Pathology^® (R&D), which concentrates on the development of new tests that have established clinical utility. As a result of R&D's work, ARUP recently launched its Rapid Acute Myeloid Leukemia Targeted Therapy Mutation Panel. This panel rapidly assesses mutations and identifies prognostic markers so that effective targeted therapies can be started promptly.

Utah Business magazine's annual Innovation Awards help to spotlight companies in Utah that are on the forefront of innovation in their industries. Nominees are evaluated by peers and leaders in the state's business, civic, and academic communities.
