Urgent action following the pogrom in Amsterdam on 7 November 2024

Urgent action following the pogrom in Amsterdam on 7 November 2024

8.11.2024

Priority question for written answer P-002484/2024
to the Commission
Rule 144
Alice Teodorescu Måwe (PPE)

On 7 November, hundreds of Jewish football supporters were attacked in Amsterdam by masked mobs. The pogrom, which occurred two days before the anniversary of 'Kristallnacht', or the 'Night of Broken Glass', and was filmed by the mobs, has been roundly condemned by, among others, Prime Minister Dick Schoof, Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, who stated that the country betrayed its Jewish inhabitants during World War II and betrayed them again on 7 November.

Meanwhile, there have been media reports that some elements in the police force in the Netherlands are refusing to protect Jewish targets, citing 'moral dilemmas'.[1]

Accordingly, in view of the pogrom in Amsterdam and reports that elements in the police force in the Netherlands are refusing to protect Jewish targets against similar attacks:

  • 1.In the light of the recent pogroms in the EU, will the Commission urgently step up action and funding to supplement the appropriations pledged under the Internal Security Fund in December 2023[2]?
  • 2.In the light of reports that elements in the police force in the Netherlands are refusing to protect Jewish targets, how does the Commission intend to ensure that all payments from the Internal Security Fund and other relevant funds are consistent with the rule of law, the EU Strategy on Combating Antisemitism and the Commission communication 'No place for hate: a Europe united against hatred'[3]?
