NYC EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT HOSTS CLIMATE WEEK TOURS OF THE CITY'S EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER, POST-DISASTER HOUSING PROTOTYPE, AND INNOVATIVE FLOOD PROTECTION MEASURES

September 18, 2024 - As part of NYC Climate Week, NYC Emergency Management invites members of the public to explore the future of disaster response and climate resilience through four exclusive, behind-the-scenes tours. Join us to discover the nerve center of the City's emergency operations, witness an innovative urban post-disaster housing solution firsthand, and take a walking tour through Red Hook to learn how the City is providing temporary flood protection in the community. Don't miss this unique opportunity to see how NYC is preparing for tomorrow's climate challenges today. Only 25 spots are available per tour-reserve your place before they're gone.

Climate Week NYC, organized by Climate Group in partnership with the UN General Assembly and the City of New York, brings together business leaders, political decision takers, local change makers and civil society representatives from all backgrounds to discuss how to accelerate climate action, fast.

WHAT: NYC Emergency Management Emergency Operations Center & Urban Post-Disaster Housing Prototype Tour

• Gain a rare glimpse into NYC's Emergency Operations Center, where critical decisions are made during the City's most challenging crises.
• Learn about the Urban Post-Disaster Housing Prototype, a game-changer in housing displaced residents in the nation's densest urban environment. The prototype offers an innovative solution for housing people displaced by disasters in dense, urban settings like New York City. Find out about the design competition that led to this prototype with a goal of keeping people closer to home in the aftermath of disaster.
• Designed in partnership with NYC Emergency Management, NYC Department of Design and Construction, FEMA, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this multi-family, multi-story housing model showcases a creative solution for a global challenge in urban areas.

WHEN: Sunday, September 22, 2024 at 2pm and Monday, September 23, 2024 at 6:30pm. The tours will last approximately one hour.

WHO: NYCEM Community Recovery and Resiliency Planner Jason Phillips and Housing Recovery Program Manager Jacob Ahola will lead the tours.

WHAT: Red Hook Interim Flood Protection Measures Tours

• Walk along Beard Street and Atlantic Basin in Red Hook, Brooklyn and witness firsthand how NYCEM is tackling coastal storms and flood risks head-on. Explore the Interim Flood Protection Measures (IFPM) Program, a critical, deployable system safeguarding low-lying neighborhoods and City facilities from flooding while the City continues to build long-term climate resilience. Learn how over 50 IFPM sites have been installed throughout the program's life to mitigate flood risks across the city.
• Understand how NYC is planning for coastal storms and ensuring that our most flood-prone areas are ready to withstand nature's increasing threats. This approximately 1.5 mile walking tour will include an overview of the IFPM program's flood risk-reduction goals and strategies, program design considerations, and a general introduction to coastal storm planning and response operations.

WHEN: Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 10:00 AM and Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at 12:00 PM. The walking tours will last approximately one hour.

WHO: Suzan Rosen, Innovation Program Manager and IFPM Coordinator, and Marguerite Lally, Mitigation Operations Specialist, will guide the tours.
