City of Valdosta to Host 25th Levi Strauss Retirement Celebration Honoring Former Employees and Retirees

The City of Valdosta is proud to announce the 25th Levi Strauss Retirement Celebration, to be held on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at the Unity Park Amphitheater, located at 301 E. Central Avenue, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is open to the entire community, with a special invitation extended to all individuals who have worked for or retired from Levi Strauss & Co.

"Levi Strauss holds a special place in Valdosta's history," said Mayor Scott James Matheson. "This company provided livelihoods for thousands of families and played a pivotal role in building the vibrant community we know today. It is an honor for the City of Valdosta to host this celebration and acknowledge the lasting contributions of Levi Strauss and its employees."

Originally established in 1963 in Valdosta under the name Oberman, the company transitioned to Levi Strauss in the early 1970s. Over the years, the facility provided employment to an estimated 1,000 to 8,000 individuals, becoming an integral part of Valdosta's economic and social fabric. The plant closed its doors in October 1999, but the legacy of Levi Strauss continues to be cherished by the community.

"We are thrilled to celebrate the contributions and memories of those who were part of Levi Strauss during its time here in Valdosta," added Councilwoman Vivian Miller-Cody. "This event is an opportunity for former employees and retirees to reconnect and for the community to honor the lasting impact Levi Strauss had on our city."

City Manager Richard Hardy emphasized the historical significance of the event, stating, "Levi Strauss was more than just a major employer in Valdosta; it was a cornerstone of our community for decades. This celebration not only honors the former employees and retirees but also reminds us of the profound role the company played in shaping Valdosta's growth and character."

Assistant City Manager Catherine Ammons highlighted the importance of hosting the event at Unity Park, stating, "Holding this celebration at Unity Park, right in the heart of downtown Valdosta, is especially meaningful. Unity Park symbolizes our community's strength, togetherness, and shared history. It is the perfect location to celebrate a company that brought so many people together and contributed significantly to Valdosta's development."

The celebration will feature a day of festivities, including live music, food vendors, and family-friendly activities. It is a momentous occasion to reflect on the company's history in Valdosta and the community it helped build.
