City to Open Cooling Center Amid Heat Advisories

A Heat Advisory was issued by the US National Weather Service (NWS) and is in effect from 11 a.m. this morning, Sept. 30, through Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 11 p.m. The advisory includes Santa Rosa and North Bay interior valleys. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect during the same period for areas that include the North Bay Interior Mountains and the Coastal Range. The heat wave will bring hot temperatures locally through the remainder of the week.

Tuesday and Wednesday are forecasted to be the hottest days of the week in Santa Rosa with temperatures forecasted to reach over 100 degrees. The NWS considers these two days a Major Heat Risk. Based on forecasted conditions, the City of Santa Rosa will open a cooling center at the Finley Community Center located at 2060 W. College Ave on Tuesday, Oct. 1, and Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (details below).

To track and provide important weather-related information to the community, the Santa Rosa Fire Department has installed six Remote Automated Weather Stations (RAWS) across Santa Rosa. These weather stations have been added to a local and national network of official stations and are now available to the community. Residents can learn more about the RAWS and monitor the varying conditions in the city on an interactive map at SRCity.org/Weather.

Although no Fire Weather Watch or Red Flag Warning is in effect, the Santa Rosa Fire Department urges residents to be Wildfire Ready. High temperatures, low humidity and breezy conditions can make the ignition of a wildfire much easier to occur. Have a plan if a fire starts near you and pay attention to the conditions locally. Visit SRCity.org/KnowYourAlerts to register or update your emergency alert settings for SoCo Alert and CivicReady.

Residents should be mindful of the heat and fire risks; follow these tips to stay safe:

  • Never leave children, seniors, or pets in a parked car during intense summer heat.
  • Drink fluids, particularly water, even if you do not feel thirsty as your body needs water to stay cool.
  • If possible, stay out of the sun and in air-conditioned areas.
  • Mow fields in the mornings before 10 a.m., but never when it is windy or excessively dry. Lawnmowers are designed to mow lawns, not weeds or dry grass. Metal blades striking rocks can create sparks and start fires.
  • Avoid outdoor activities that could spark a wildfire.

The cooling center at Finley Community Center offers limited space and accommodations and community members should be aware of the following:

  • Free Wi-Fi is available. Books, games, and/or laptops and headphones are allowed. There is no TV available.
  • Food that is ready to eat is permissible; kitchen access will not be available.
  • Due to space limitations, each person is allowed only one small tote and daypack. The City of Santa Rosa is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Visitors must comply with the City's Standards of Behavior.
  • Only service animals will be permitted inside of the cooling center. No other animals or pets permitted.

In addition to the designated cooling center, the Recreation and Parks Department operates air-conditioned lobbies where residents may cool off during the day, at Steele Lane Community Center, 415 Steele Lane from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and at Person Senior Wing, 2060 W. College Ave., 8:30 a.m.to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
