Las Vegas Residents Invited To Join In Parks For Pollinators September BioBlitz At Floyd Lamb Park At Tule Springs
Community Members Are Encouraged To Observe And Take Photographs Of Pollinators, Plants And Wildlife All September To Participate In The Online iNaturalist Project
Community members are invited to the free second annual Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz event Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Floyd Lamb Park at Tule Springs, located at 9200 Tule Springs Road. The event will be held in the Hay Barn and Courtyard near the Historic Fields area in the park and feature many exhibitors, games, giveaways, STEAM activities and food trucks. Representatives from the DISCOVERY Children's Museum, Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Nevada Division of Forestry, Red Rock Audubon and Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation will speak to participants about local pollinators and their needs for a healthy habitat.
With the help of local partners, the city of Las Vegas event held in 2023 earned the Nevada Parks and Recreation Society "Outdoor Program of Excellence" Award. Together, participants captured just over 200 different species of plants, animals and insects in the park that day. At least 115 of those observations became "research grade," according to iNaturalist. The Parks for Pollinators BioBlitz is part of a national campaign sponsored by the National Recreation and Park Association and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation.
The main event in 2024 will be held Sept. 14, but participants are encouraged to explore and document the natural environment and wildlife at Floyd Lamb Park all month long. By joining the park's project page on iNaturalist and uploading their observations during the month of September, participants can learn even more about local pollinators, becoming "citizen scientists" every time they log in. They also can track how far they climb on the digital leaderboard. By engaging with the iNaturalist app, the online community will help confirm the identification of the species of plant, animal or insect participants observed.
