Tiffin University Hosts Sixth Annual Pitch Competition

Tiffin University recently hosted its sixth annual pitch competition, welcoming marketing students from Calvert High School, Heidelberg University and TU itself. The event, facilitated by Dr. Kellie McGilvray, Professor of Marketing and Assistant Dean for Undergraduate and Graduate Online Programs at TU, served as the students' final project for the semester.

The competition marked the culmination of a semester's worth of dedication and effort. Student teams worked to identify a market need, develop a comprehensive business plan, analyze industry trends, create branded logos and slogans and calculate manufacturing costs. During the event, the finalists presented their innovative business ideas to an audience of potential clients, followed by a Q&A session where judges delved deeper into the concepts.

This dynamic showcase highlighted not only the creativity and strategic thinking of the students but also their ability to bring ideas to life in a professional setting. Cash prizes were awarded to each of the finalists, with the first-place prize of $1,000, generously donated by Jeff Knedler, President of Hempy Water. Winners were selected by a group of business-minded community leaders. Knedler met with each of the groups throughout the semester, coaching them through the business plan process.

McGilvray said "I have alumni that credits this course and experience with successfully gaining employment in their field. It is exciting that TU supports me and our students in these events. Most importantly the mentorship that Jeff Knedler provides these students is priceless. He truly cares about the students and he pushes them to their potential which allows them to achieve the 'Ah-ha' moments. We make a great team in making this event bigger and better each year and we are already planning for next year."

Knedler followed up by saying, "Over the years, the TU Pitch Competition has grown into a highly anticipated annual event, which now includes Heidelberg University and Tiffin Calvert. This local version of the popular TV show Shark Tank has prepared hundreds of students to compete and succeed on an elite level in the business world."

TU President Dr. Lillian Schumacher addressed the crowd before winners were announced and said "Many entrepreneurs who have started an organization or built on an idea like these today, started in a situation similar to what you have experienced this semester in your class. And it is so rewarding for us to see you being able to present your ideas. You are all winners in my book!"

The first-place award went to TU's "TU Grab and Go"; second place went to Calvert's "Red Alert" and third place to Heidelberg's "TT Center."
