The head of the FDFA, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, will travel to New York on 18 November 2024 to participate in two Security Council meetings organised by the United Kingdom on the situations in the Middle East and in Ukraine.
On 18 November, Mr Cassis will take part in two Security Council meetings organised by the United Kingdom on the current situations in the Middle East and in Ukraine.
Since the Security Council's last high-level debate, regional tensions in the Middle East have increased. The aim of the meeting on 18 November is to reflect on ways to build momentum towards ending the conflicts in the region, including an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and an increase in humanitarian aid. In addition, the meeting will focus on a discussion on how to achieve a stable and secure future for the people of the Middle East on the basis of the two-state solution.
In the afternoon, Mr Cassis will take part in a Security Council briefing on the war of aggression against Ukraine, at a time when the conflict has been going on for 1,000 days. The recent escalations in the war zone and the global consequences, such as the destabilisation of global food and energy security, will be at the heart of the discussions in New York.
Mr Cassis' participation in the two meetings organised under the presidency of the United Kingdom follows on from previous visits to New York by the Swiss foreign minister. On 29 October 2024, he chaired a high-level debate on the Middle East under the Swiss presidency of the Security Council. On 24 September, he also took part in a ministerial-level meeting on Ukraine at the Security Council as part of the opening week of the UN General Assembly.
In addition, Mr Cassis will take part in a roundtable discussion in New York focusing on the situation in Sudan. After more than a year and a half of conflict, the country is facing one of the worst humanitarian disasters of our time. The event will focus on how the international community can take concrete measures to improve the humanitarian situation of the civilian population.
The head of the FDFA will also use his presence in New York for bilateral talks.
