Burwood Police Area Command detectives are continuing to appeal for information following the formal identification of the woman found deceased in a Burwood unit last week.

Just after 8.45am on Monday (12 August 2024), emergency services were called to the courtyard of a building on Conder Street, Burwood, following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command arrived to find the body of a man, who has since been identified as a 21-year-old university student from China.

A crime scene was established, and detectives commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

As part of inquiries, officers attended a unit of the building complex where they located the body of a woman, who has since been identified as Xiaoting Wang, also a 21-year-old university student from China.

A second crime scene was established at the unit which underwent forensic examination.

Detectives, assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, established Strike Force Torphins to investigate the deaths.

As investigations continue, police are urging anyone who may have more information about the incident to come forward.

Superintendent Christine McDonald, Commander of Burwood Police Area Command, said this incident has greatly affected the Burwood community.

"There are many people in the Burwood and wider Sydney community who have been affected by the death of Xiaoting.

"She, like many international students, came to this country for education and opportunity, and for her life to end like this is tragic." Det C/Supt McDonald said.

"I urge anyone affected by the deaths to attend a vigil, which is being held later this month, to support each other through this time."

The vigil will be held at the Burwood Pavilion Centre at 5pm on Tuesday 27 August 2024.

Anyone with information that may assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence. The public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.
