Helene Survivors are Eligible for FEMA Moving and Storage Cost Reimbursement

FEMA may help with moving and storage costs for eligible North Carolina survivors who are unable to stay in your home or who are living in a temporary shelter.

Moving and Storage Assistance

If you are living in a disaster-declared county and your home is not safe to live in due to damage from Tropical Storm Helene, you may be eligible for FEMA Moving and Storage Assistance. This assistance can help you move and store essential items while repairing your home, stay in temporary shelter or while you wait to move into permanent housing. To qualify for this help, you must apply with FEMA and meet the following conditions:

• Your primary residence is uninhabitable due to the disaster.
• You are moving or storing household items to prevent further damage.
• The items you are moving or storing are considered essential, such as appliances, furniture or clothing.

Eligible Expenses

FEMA will only consider moving and storage costs that aren't fully covered by other sources like insurance, including:

• Commercial movers.
• Rental of a moving truck.
• Fuel for the rental vehicle.
• Tape and boxes.
• Storage unit fees.
• Sales taxes for the expenses listed above.

• Call 800-621-FEMA (3362) from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET daily. The telephone line is open every day and help is available in most languages. If you use a Video Relay Service (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA your number for that service.
