1 Dead After Driver Hits Parked Car, Flees In South Los Angeles

A driver crashed into a parked car before fleeing the scene in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning, leaving behind a deceased passenger, according to authorities. The crash occurred at about 4 a.m. in the 3900 block of 3rd Avenue of the Leimert Park neighborhood of South L.A. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a driver smashed into a parked, unoccupied car. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled the scene by foot. A person was later found dead in the passenger seat, police said. It's not clear if the person had died before or after the driver fled. The deceased person was yet to be identified by police as of 8 a.m. Sunday. No additional details were immediately made available.

Three Suspects In Custody After Harvard Park Shooting

Three suspects were taken into custody Sunday after a shooting in the Harvard Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The shooting was reported just before 4 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Western and Slauson avenues, the Los Angeles Police Department announced. Officers believe at least one person was shot, but allegedly fled the scene. LAPD Public Information Officer Tony Im told City News Service it was unknown if the shooting was gang-related. Three suspects were taken into custody, according to Im, but no identifying information was available. There was no victim information available.

One Hospitalized After Shooting In Exposition Park

Police are investigating a shooting that left one man hospitalized in Exposition Park on Sunday. It happened at around 2:30 p.m. in the 1000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, just south of the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The victim was hospitalized in unknown condition. Investigators say that the suspect, only described as a man in his 40s, was wearing a gray shirt and had a handgun. He was last seen driving southbound on Vermont Avenue in a 2005 to 2010 Ford Explorer. No further information was provided.

Naked Man Terrorizing Mid-Wilshire Neighborhood Taken Into Custody

A homeless naked man who was disturbing residents of a Mid-Wilshire neighborhood was detained Friday. According to a resident, the naked man had been harassing neighbors on the 1300 block of Redondo Blvd. since 2 a.m., and was either looking through someone's window or trying to get into someone's home. The resident then told FOX 11 that the naked man was pleasuring himself in someone's backyard. According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the man was found hiding behind a white Prius and was transported to a hospital after complaining of leg pain. Neighbors said this is the same homeless man who walking around and touching himself just last week. The man, identified as 51-year-old Dushun Barnett, was taken into custody on burglary charges a week before that.

Man, 75, Reported Missing From Eagle Rock Area

Authorities Monday sought the public's help to find a 75-year-old man who went missing from the Eagle Rock area. Fred Smith was last seen about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday leaving his home in the 4900 block of North Maywood Avenue, possibly driving a silver 2004 Mercedes-Benz S550, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Smith is described as Black, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighing about 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing a black shirt and gray sweat pants. Anyone knowing his whereabouts was urged to call the Missing Persons Unit at 213-996-1800, or Northeast Station at 323-561-3211. Tipsters may also call 877-LAPD-247 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS, or use the website www.lacrimestoppers.org.

Phoenix Officer Dies Days After Shooting

An officer with the Phoenix Police Department has died from injuries he sustained during a shooting, the department said in a statement. Officer Zane Coolidge was critically wounded in a shooting on Sept. 3, the department said during a news conference. He died from his injuries on Sept. 6. Coolidge was a five-year veteran of the department. He was assigned to the field training squad in the Mountain View Precinct. "Since Tuesday night's shooting, Officer Coolidge put up a valiant fight, despite the odds being against him," Interim Chief of Police Michael G. Sullivan said in a statement. "He has been surrounded by loved ones and blanketed in the prayers of this community. The injuries he sustained after the cowardly acts of another were just too much for him to overcome. Officer Coolidge's legacy will forever be a part of this Department." The shooting happened on Sept. 3 when Coolidge and his partner, Officer Matthew Haney, responded to a call about a man trying to break into a vehicle, according to the city of Phoenix. Upon arrival, they encountered the suspect who fled the scene on foot. During the pursuit, the suspect opened fire, striking both officers. Coolidge suffered critical injuries, while Haney was saved from serious harm by his ballistic vest, city officials said. Haney was treated and released from the hospital on Sept. 4.

Colorado State Patrol Trooper Shot While Parked Along Highway, Kills Gunman

A gunman driving on U.S. 36 fired on a parked Colorado State Patrol trooper on Saturday afternoon before he pulled over, got out of his vehicle and was killed by the wounded law enforcement officer in a shootout along the turnpike's center median, authorities said. The injured officer, identified by the state patrol as Cpl. Tye Simcox was taken to Denver Health and released later in the afternoon after being treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. "I will tell you very directly that our member was targeted today by a man that intended to kill him, and that is shocking and unacceptable," Col. Matthew Packard, the chief of the Colorado State Patrol, said during a news conference Saturday evening. "But our Colorado state trooper responded appropriately and swiftly and courageously, and he won today," he said. "And by winning, not only did he save his own life, but he saved the rest of his community from someone who was clearly intending to do evil." Simcox was parked in his marked Ford 150 pickup truck between two concrete barriers in the center median of U.S. 36 , just west of Federal Boulevard in Westminster, doing paperwork around 1:18 p.m., Packard said. An adult male driving a black Chevrolet pickup truck eastbound on U.S. 36 slowed, he said.

Four LAFD Firefighters Injured In Explosion While Battling Car Fire In San Fernando Valley

Four Los Angeles Fire Department firefighters were injured on Saturday when a car that was on fire exploded in a San Fernando Valley neighborhood. The blaze was reported just before 2:30 p.m. at a home in the 9700 block of N. Wheatland Avenue, just north of Sunland Boulevard in the Shadow Hills neighborhood, according to LAFD officials. "A fire involving a (conventional gasoline fueled) coupe that contained excessive personal storage is now out," LAFD's statement said. Four firefighters were injured by what crews called an explosion while attempting to put out the flames. Three were initially taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth crew member was also hospitalized at a later time despite initially showing no injury or medical complaint, a department statement said. In a more recent statement, LAFD said that the "'explosion' is best now defined instead as a large 'fireball' that suddenly erupted from the burning vehicle."

Southern California Hospital Seeks Help Identifying 2 Patients

A local hospital needs help to identify two patients who were found injured in Los Angeles County. The patients are described as a man around 55 years old and a woman who is believed to be 58, according to the Los Angeles General Medical Center. The patients were found injured and have been hospitalized for some time, including one who's been in the hospital all year. Hospital staff are hoping to locate their family members. The first patient is a man around 55 years old. He is described as possibly Asian, standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing around 160 pounds. He has dark brown hair, brown eyes and a medium build. He has been hospitalized for nearly nine months since being admitted on Dec. 17, 2023. He was found lying on the ground in Los Angeles, staff said. The second patient, the 58-year-old woman, is 5 feet 4 inches tall and weighs around 140 pounds. She has "salt and pepper" hair, brown eyes and an average build. Officials said the woman is originally from Shreveport, Louisiana. She was found injured on the ground near 6th and Hill Streets in L.A.'s Skid Row area.

City Of LA Extends Operation Of Cooling Center Amid Scorching Heat Wave

Cooling centers across the city of Los Angeles will remain open through Monday as the Southland continues experiencing scorching heat and high temperatures. L.A.'s Emergency Management Department activated six cooling centers on Tuesday prompted by a late-summer heat wave. Nearly 400 people have made use of the centers, according to Joseph Riser, a spokesman for the department. Residents can find shelter from the heat at the following locations from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.: Lincoln Heights Senior Citizen Center, located at 2323 Workman St.; Lafayette Multipurpose Community Center, located at 625 South Lafayette Park Place; Sunland Senior Citizen Center, located at 8640 Fenwick St.; Mid Valley Senior Citizen Center, located at 8801 Kester Ave.; Fred Roberts Recreation Center, located at 4700 South Honduras St.; and Jim Gilliam Recreation Center, located at 4000 S. La Brea Ave. Additionally, other recreation and parks facilities and more than 70 L.A. City Public Library branches are available as cooling centers during regular hours.

Bridge Fire In California's Angeles National Forest Grows To Over 800 Acres, Evacuations And Road Closures In Place

A brush fire burning in the Angeles National Forest that began Sunday afternoon, continues to grow Monday and remains 0% contained with evacuations in place. The Bridge Fire was last reported to be at 800 acres and grew to 820 acres Monday morning. The blaze was first reported at around 3 p.m.Sunday near the area of East Fork Road and Glendora Mountain Road in the San Gabriel Canyon area, according to a post on X from the Angeles National Forest. As Los Angeles County Fire Department crews worked to extinguish the flames, East Fork Road at Highway 39 was closed, as well as Glendora Mountain Road and Glendora Ridge Road. In order to avoid vehicle congestion in the area, California Highway Patrol officials closed Highway 39 at the mouth of the canyon. Because of the fire and the potential for growth, all forest visitors were ordered to evacuate the area, ANF officials said. At 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Los Angeles Fire Department issued an evacuation orderfor the communities of Camp Williams and River Community.
