Road safety - an action not just a thought

Rockhampton Region residents are being asked to take action and be road safe this Queensland Road Safety Week, with Council reminding the community that road safety is not just a thought it is an action everyone plays a role in.

Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor said Council is proud to support the QLD Government's StreetSmarts initiative, encouraging the community to jump on board and pledge to drive safely.

"We must all adopt the attitude that everyone plays a role in keeping our roads safe," Cr Taylor said.

"It doesn't matter if you're a bike rider, heavy-vehicle operator, motorcyclist, pedestrian, or driver - if you use the road, you play an important role in helping to make our roads safer.

"Queensland Road Safety Week is a chance for everyone to raise road safety awareness and pledge to work towards saving lives on our roads.

"This week's campaign sharpens our focus on collective and individual responsibilities for all road users and we're proud to support this initiative."

Councillor Taylor said Council is contributing to the focus of road safety and is dedicated to creating safer roads through infrastructure investments.

"We want to emphasise our commitment to making our Region safer for everyone," Cr Taylor said.

"As part of this commitment, Council has partnered with different levels of Government to secure funding for a series of road safety projects aimed at improving road conditions.

"Thanks to support from the Australian Government's Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program (HVSPP), major infrastructure upgrades are progressing well within the Parkhurst Industrial Area. These critical upgrades will improve key corridors for trucks and facilitate growth within the Parkhurst area.

"Council also received funding under the Black Spot program that will see the completion of three projects across South Rockhampton in coming the months. These upgrades are aimed at reducing the incidence and severity of road traffic crashes.

"With the support of the Australian Government's Remote Roads Upgrade Pilot Program grant, road improvements to Stanwell Waroula Road have been undertaken. A section of the road underwent widening, improving signage, and enhancing visibility at key intersections.

"Recognising the importance of protecting our youngest residents, various projects are underway and planned to improve areas near schools, reducing road dangers and creating safer crossings.

"These projects are not just about infrastructure improvements; they are about saving lives and reducing injuries on our roads.

"We are working diligently to ensure that every corner of our Region benefits from these safety enhancements, from the city centre to our rural roads."

"Our goal is to create a road network that is safe, efficient, and accessible for everyone. By working together and staying committed to these safety initiatives, we can make a real difference in our community.

"Remember to avoid taking risks behind the wheel as you not only endanger your own life, but the lives of your passengers, other motorists and road users around you."
