Durbin, Duckworth Announce $1.5 Million In Funding To Modernize Homes For Illinois Families

SPRINGFIELD - U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today announced $1.5 million in federal funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to finance energy efficient and climate resilient improvements for affordable homes in Illinois under the Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP).

Funded under the Inflation Reduction Act, GRRP provides funding for direct loans and grants to make improvements to HUD-subsidized properties serving very low-income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities. The first project is a $750,000 loan to Brainerd Senior Center in Chicago, and the second is a $750,000 grant to Round Barn Manor in Champaign, Illinois. These housing properties are the first to use GRRP funds for construction projects in Illinois.

"I'm thrilled to see $1.5 million from Democrat's Inflation Reduction Act going towards modernizing affordable, efficient, and climate-resilient homes for lower-income families, people with disabilities, and seniors," said Durbin. "This funding will improve quality of life for community members while delivering on the promises of the Biden-Harris Administration's Justice40 Initiative to ensure federal funds reach our most overburdened and underserved communities."
